ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Very Rare Antique/Vintage Circa 1910’s-20’s Color Collotype Lithograph of an Industrial Steel Plant Scene titled, “Blast Furnace” (German: “Hochofen”), after the original painting by the world-renowned listed painter & lithographer, ‘Heinrich Hermanns’ (German, 1862-1942), whose printed signature appears lower right in the image area. The scene is similar to other steelworks & ironworks paintings ‘plant scenes’ that Hermanns did while in the Ruhr region of Westphalia, Germany ( “Eisenhüttenwerk im Ruhrgebiet” / “Ironworks in the Ruhr” / “Stahlwerks” or “Hüttenwerk”). Publisher & Print Info: The publisher is unknown, but may have been Hermanns himself as he was also a lithographer. ‘Printed in Germany’, as appears stamped lower left in the outer margin corner next to the title & artist name which are hand written in pencil. ‘OSD’, is also written in pencil, upper left in the outer margin corner, but I have no idea what it stands for. The Litho is on a nice medium-heavier weight cream-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 21-7/8” x 27-1/4”, Image size is 18-1/2” x 24-3/4”. and is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique/vintage age with Absolutely No Color Fade-Beautiful Rich Color! This Litho has been in a drawer amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. Minimal slight & small crescent-creases here & there in the image area which aren’t really even noticeable at all from the front (mostly noticeable from the back). Only one very tiny 1/8” outer margin edge tear on bottom edge far left which is completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out, and is repaired from behind with archival tape for protection. Other slight creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few margin edges and the margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear creasing—all of which are also negligible & easily matted & framed out. Extremely minimal lightly scattered & very tiny faint foxing specks here & there on the sheet (none noticeable in image area) and only a handful noticeable in the outer margins. Some outer margin edgewear with some dents & dings here & there—also negligible. Minimal slight toning of stock from age. Extremely minimal a slight small surface scuffing here & there in image area which isn’t really noticeable either and aren’t really even worth mentioning. This gorgeous antique/vintage litho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
