T This particular item was made from a beautiful piece of STABILIZED MAPLE BURL. A burl is an abnormal growth that typically grows on the outside of the tree and usually near the tree trunk. So during the turning process, natural flaws such as dark lines, imperfections, natural voids, knots, worm holes, insect art, etc. all adding to the uniqueness and beauty of the piece, are revealed. Maple Burl has so many colors throughout that I generally leave the wood as is, and just let nature show its beauty. A stabilized pen blank is injected with acrylic at high pressure which dramatically helps both the color and figure of the wood to POP! I am now using the Super Glue (CA Glue) finish for all of my letter openers. This type of finish is extremely durable and will help keep your letter opener safe from water, oil and the rigors of daily use. It takes a little longer to use this finishing method, and costs a little more as well. However the finish you have on the item when completed, is very similar to an acrylic, and will last the life of the item with no problems. Letter Opener has an overall length that measures 7¼” long and the base portion has a diameter of ½”. You will be shipped the exact item shown.I have been a woodworker for over 20 years, making everything from complete custom cabinetry, to bowls, boxes, and pens on the lathe. However, due to health issues, I now only turn projects on the lathe in order to give myself something to do for the few hours a day I can stand.
