Despite the savage cold, the snow and winter darkness, and most of all the relentless ice, scores of expeditions left home ports to seek the elusive Passage linking the Atlantic and the Pacific while others sought the North Pole. Some went missing, and the search for these lost seamen added to the expanding knowledge of the frozen world. As the author notes, this is a book about explorers as much as it is about exploring, for the quest is peopled with remarkable figures (both men and women). Caught up in the allure of the North, they might have stepped out of the Age of Chivalry, so dedicated were they to their various searches. When he began his researches, Pierre Berton says, he thought of them as heroes, unflawed by human frailty. That was how they had been portrayed in the past. But their hand-written diaries and private journals tell a different tale. “They were,” says Berton, “neither saints nor supermen but ordinary creatures, subject to human strengths and frailties – often eccentric, always ambitious, sometimes insecure, occasionally petty, and remarkably passionate.” The Arctic Grail reads like a novel, but in this instance the characters are real people. The cast includes men of every temperament, from the pious and ambitious Edward Parry, the first white man to probe deep into the Arctic labyrinth, in 1819, to the ruthless and paranoid Robert Peary, who claimed to have reached the Pole in 1909. We meet Charles Hall, an obscure printer who abruptly sold his business, abandoned his wife and family, and headed for a frozen world of which he knew almost nothing; Adolphus Greely, the Civil War veteran who had to watch his men slowly starve to death on Ellesmere Island; Robert McClure, who claimed that he was the first to find the fabled Passage; and, of course, the flawed hero John Franklin, a plodding naval officer who literally could not kill a fly but whose expeditions were responsible for the deaths of more men than those of any other Arctic explorer. They are larger than life, these adventurers into the frozen world: John Ross, whose naval career ended when he “saw” a range of mountains that didn’t exist; Elisha Kane, who carried with him into the Arctic the portrait of the teen-aged spirit rapper, Margaret Fox; Frederick Cook, who faked reaching the North Pole; Salomon Andree, who died trying to prove the Pole could be reached by balloon; Roald Amundsen, the cool Norwegian who managed a voyage in a tiny sloop that the British Navy failed to do with its great three-masters; and, of course Jane Franklin, the explorer’s formidable widow, who forced the long, far-reaching, and expensive search for her husband upon a reluctant British government. Equally important are the native peoples, especially the Eskimos, without whom, Berton says, Arctic exploration would not have been possible. Here we meet Tookolito (“Hannah”) and Ebierbing (“Joe”), the remarkable pair who had taken tea with Queen Victoria and helped rediscover Martin Frobisher’s Elizabethan diggings on Baffin Island; Kalutunah, the Greenland native leader who saved the lives of Kane’s men, and Akaitcho, the chief of the Copper Indians, without whose tracking and hunting skills John Franklin would have succumbed to starvation in the Barren Lands. In an era when Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic is again challenged, The Arctic Grail serves as a timely re-examination of the historic events that took place at the top of the continent during the Golden Age of Exploration. PIERRE BERTON’s interest in Canada’s North goes back to his formative years in the Yukon. His book The Mysterious North, published in 1956, took him from Banks Island to Pond Inlet on Baffin Island and won him his first Governor General’s Award. A Companion of the Order of Canada, REVIEWS == The literature of Arctic exploration teems with exciting stories of hardship, valor, conflict and mystery. There are three distinct periods of exploration: the quest for the Northwest Passage by the British Navy, the 15-year search for the lost Franklin Expedition and the attempts to reach the North Pole. Berton (The Mysterious North) combines these voyages into a single narrative that focuses on the explorers. We see the mindset of the British, unwilling to take advice from whalers and, for 90 years, refusing to avail themselves of the dogsleds and Eskimo clothing best suited to Arctic conditions. We follow the progression from the desire for discovery and scientific knowledge to obsession with national pride and personal ambition. Berton examines in detail the Cook-Peary controversy and concludes that both men were charlatans and neither reached the North Pole; modern scholarship supports this theory. Readers who think the ultimate adventure took place at the South Pole should rediscover the Arctic explorations. REVIEWS == This book was impossible to put down For adventure / history buffs, this book give an exciting, detailed chronicle of all the numerous attempts to find the Northwest Passage. The British navy, idle between wars, sent a series of expeditions into the arctic cold. Many captains had little idea of what preparations to make and the crew, as a result, endured unbelievable hardships. Additional expeditions were sent to rescue ships that had not returned after two or three years. Later expeditions started to learn that the natives had important lessons to teach. The native were surviving and the early sailors were dying of scurvy. The most successful leaders went all but native but the task of reaching the North Pole was still elusive. REVIEWS ==This is the complete saga of the pursuit for two of the world’s greatest geographical prizes–the elusive Passage linking the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the North Pole. Culled from extensive research of handwritten diaries and private journals, The Arctic Grail is the definitive book on the age of arctic exploration and adventure. Journey across the ice with a Who’s Who of polar explorers, men of every temperament, including the pious and ambitious Edward Perry, the first explorer to probe deep into the Arctic labyrinth; Adolphus Greely, a Civil War veteran who had to watch his men starve to death on Ellesmere Island; Robert McClure, who claimed that he was the first to find the fabled Northwest Passage; and the flawed hero John Franklin, a meek naval officer whose expeditions were responsible for the deaths of more men than those of any other Arctic explorer. Travel with the adventurer Roald Amundsen, the cool Norwegian who completed a voyage in a tiny sloop that the British Navy failed to accomplish with its great three-masted ships; Frederick Cook, who lied about reaching the North Pole; and finally, the ruthless and paranoid Robert Peary, who claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1909. As much about the explorers who braved impossible odds as it is about each expedition, The Arctic Grail is an epic account of the Golden Age of Exploration at the top of the world.
